Heart Shaped Whoopie Pies

Just For Your Valentine

Red Velvet Whoopie PiesYield: approximately 18 sandwich cookies, but depends entirely on the size of hearts you make

For the cookies:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tbsp. cocoa powder
½ tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
8 tbsp. unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 large egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
½ cup buttermilk, at room temperature
1 oz. red food coloring

For the frosting:
8 oz. cream cheese
5 tbsp. unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2½ cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted

Preheat the oven to 375˚ F.

Transfer the batter to a pastry bag fitted with a large plain round tip.  Pipe the batter onto the parchment paper using the heart tracings as a guide.  Bake 7-9 minutes or until the tops are set, rotating the baking sheets halfway through.  Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets at least 10 minutes, until they can be easily transferred to a cooling rack.  Repeat with any remaining batter.  Allow cookies to cool completely before proceeding.

To make the cream cheese frosting, in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment beat the cream cheese and butter on medium-high speed until well combined and smooth, about 2-3 minutes.  Mix in the vanilla extract.  Gradually beat in the confectioners’ sugar until totally incorporated, increase the speed and then beat until smooth.

How To: Fishtail Braid

Quick Style Tips

Oh fishtail braid, you daunting little braid, you. Time to be handled!

Before we even start here are a few tips:
  • If you've got layers, it's very difficult to get a flawless fishtail braid, don't aim for perfection, just keep it fun and funky.
  • Thick hair won't make as delicate of a braid unless it's long (Mine is above my bra strap, but very thick so you can only get so detailed).
  • Make sure that you've got spray, a rubber band or clear hair tie (This will get cut away at the end, so don't use a Kitsch one!) and if you'd like a brush handy.
  • Brush through hair if you want a more structured style, or leave it natural (like mine) if you want to keep it wild.
  • Grab your two favorite hair ties! I went with the Wild Roses collection.
  1. Use a disposable hair tie to secure your hair at the base of your neck. You can either do it in the middle, higher, lower, of to one side- the options are endless. You can even to fishtail pig tails, this just makes it much more simple.
  2. Separate hair into two big sections.
  3. Take a small piece (The finer the piece, the more refined your braid will be, the larger, the messier) from section 1 and pull it over to section 2.
  4. Take a small piece from section 2 and pull it into section 1. TIP: Once you braid it over, don't worry about holding onto it, just let it blend in with that half o the hair.
  5. Alternate until you get to the end. If you've got layers, they might be sticking out. You can either start again with wet hair, or just embrace this.
  6. Tie at the end with TWO of your favorite hair ties. Honestly, is one EVER enough?
  7. With a small set of scissors CAREFULLY cut the rubber band that you've placed at top of your braid. Use your hands to gently tousle and rearrange the crown. If you like you can even use hairspray to texturize the top layers to make it more funky.
  8. Enjoy your day and your lovely fishtail braid!

Spring FORWARD Salad

Can it be Spring yet?

Weather has been a bit nuts in California lately. So if you're confused about what season you're in, don't worry. I think almost everyone is. Anyway, here is a great spring salad, because maybe if we eat in that season, it will magically be that season.

Maybe not, but it tastes great and looks pretty.

Spring Salad
organic Greenmarket greens (mixed blend)
edible flowers
1 blood orange, peeled/sliced into rounds
1 small carrot, sliced into dimes

Vegan Poppseed Dressing
makes about 1 cup (so you will have leftovers)

2 Tbsp Vegan mayo (aka, Vegenaise)
2 tsp spicy Dijon mustard
1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp agave or maple syrup
1 tsp shallots, finely chopped
1 Tbsp poppy seeds

How To: Get The Most Out Of Life

What YOLO Really Means

So we all spent 2012 learning what The Motto was, and it's YOLO. Whether you see it as YOLO or Carpe Diem (latin for seize the day) I've come to the conclusion that I've finally figured out what it is.

It's probably easier to describe what YOLO isn't;
  • Driving at ridiculous speeds, just for the thrill. That's just dangerous and stupid.
  • Overindulging. Whether it's alcohol, junk food or other not so good for you things. That's just certain to shorten your life-span. Keep in mind, most things are okay in moderation.
  • Being rude, disrespectful or tasteless. Keep it classy, and not with a "K" because not only is proper spelling hot, the Kardashian's don't always make headlines for the best reasons.
While texting a girlfriend the other day, and carefully packing up my favorite Kitsch items into my carryon I had an epiphany. What we were actually doing was "YOLO", we were seizing the day, or being really ridiculous, but in a way that wasn't effecting anyone.

Lianne and I have the best adventures, and this short trip to Sydney, Australia was certainly one of them. In seventeen hours we managed to travel from Brisbane to Sydney, stay at a lovely (and cheap! thanks to livingsocial!) hotel in the center of the city, and get access to see Childish Gambino's (Also known as Donald Glover, who plays Troy in Community) first Australian show. We have lovingly decided to call our adventures #theadventuresofching because what's the point in having great times if they can't be hash tagged and then documented on instagram? (Totally kidding!)

But before you think, wow- you just went to a concert. It wasn't ANY concert, it was a concert that sold out in a record breaking ELEVEN minutes. So obviously, we had no tickets. That's were the power of social networking comes in, Donald Glover I (Childish Gambino, aka Donald Glover II's father) tweeted me to see if I had made it into the concert, and voila! Tickets were at the door.

Now the point of this is to let you know that anyone can have something miraculous happen to them. I didn't know him, or anyone in connection with him but got insanely lucky. Probably through much tweeting (which I hate, I only got a twitter for this reason) and positive thinking.

Moral of the story? Think positive, never stop going and seize the day. Seize the day whether it be traveling, meeting new people, venturing beyond your comfort zone, testing your personal limits or just having a GOOD time. You do only live once, so make sure you make the most of it!

Oh- and don't forget to have Kitsch on your wrist.

How be a jetsetter!

Kitsch in my Carry-on!

Have you ever wondered how business people travel so easily and never check bags? Well here are some helpful hints to get you through your next trip! This is done off of my instagram account of course! Packing a DSLR is so impractical!

Only Pack What You Need
Plan ahead! I have my airport outfit (a comfortable skater style dress with nude flats), my night out outfit (skinny jeans, peep-toed black wedges, a funky blazer and black cami), my sleep outfit (shorts and a tshirt) and my travel home outfit (leggings, sweater and oversized tee, perfect for a 6am flight back home, which also matches my nude flats). I also coordinated my Kitsch items, I'll be wearing the Peace of My Heart rings and the R.I.P. (really interesting person necklace, earring set). Mixed metals go perfectly with the colors I'm going to be wearing!

Save The Packaging!

My earrings won't get lost, my necklace won't get tangled and my rings are tucked safely away. The Kitsch team spends a lot of time designing these lovely packages, and they are so practical! You don't need more jewelry, and it's a pain if you attempt to wear it on the flight, so stow it in your carry-on and wear it later!

Do Your Hair!
To avoid having to pack extra styling products, do your hair before you go, and make sure it's "First day" hair, if you need to put it up, your favorite hair ties won't leave a crease so make sure you stock up.

Keep Travel Sizes
You know those free samples you get from Sephora or many other cosmetics outlets? Keep them! I have my dr murad face wash, and I wet a few cotton pads with my toner before putting them in a mini ziplock bag. So space efficient.

Always Plan With Liquids
Remember to check the international and national flight standards for carrying liquids, gels or aerosols on flights. You never want your favorite perfume to be left behind because you forgot to read the rules. Better safe than sorry in my opinion!

Pack As You Apply
Before you head out, do your makeup and put each item into a ziplock bag so it's all in one spot. This ensures you don't miss out on any absolute necessities!

Do you have any tips that you would like to share from your jet-setting experiences?

Well Said, Karl Lagerfeld

Chic isn't about money, it's about style

“Never use the word “cheap”. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes (the rich buy them too). There is good clothing design on every level today. You can be the chicest thing in the world in a T-shirt and jeans — it’s up to you.”

-Karl Lagerfeld

Although Karl totally forgot to add Kitsch to that list, it's true! You don't have to buy designer items you can look chic in a t-shirt, jeans and a couple of hair ties!

Have a great Sunday!

Shoes For Spring

Are they in? Or are they out?

Seasons change, trends change and hey, maybe even YOU have changed. Although we're not quite ready to pack up the cold weather clothes, it's time to start talking about something new! After all, in the fashion world we tend to go from fall to RESORT to spring and summer. Poor winter always gets left out. I think it's only because winter is just fall with thicker layers and a little glitter (to be festive of course!).

Heel (less) Heels

Lady Gaga has been busy touring and traveling the world, and not making too many fashion headlines. So can these crazy heels be finally laid to rest?

I personally have never understood them, a bit to obscure for me. They look great on the runway, but then attempting to watch your friend dance in them on Saturday night is painful, for both parties.

I think these can be boxed up, donated, left behind or possibly used as a weapon later down the road, but they are definitely not going to be a big trend for spring.

Updated Oxford

Who doesn't love a good oxford!? Spring is a great time to pair gorgeous oxfords (I love these ones from Jeffery Campbell) with a pair of jeans or even transition to a nice dress when the weather warms enough! They look great with high socks, no socks or on their own and will definitely add a touch of class to your wardrobe?

Tip: Search for ones other than just black. Look for texture, print or even an awesome color! I would absolutely LOVE a color blocked pair of oxfords... time to start searching! (Just as a tip, color blocking is here to stay!...for now.)

Point Your Peep Toes Out The Door

I'm a die hard peep toe fan, if I could, I would only own peep toes. I'm weird and feel that my toes need to "breathe" or feel constrained in traditional heels. However, that idea just has to go because this spring is definitely going to be about the pointed toe shoe!

From your basic pointed pump, to something a bit more sassy like the these strappy sandals make sure that you go for it!

Tip: If you wear these with a skirt, they will make your legs look shorter because of the ankle strap. Pair with some jeans and voila! The point will totally work to your advantage to make those pins look loooong.

Although I could list many beauties, what do you feel is going to be big for spring? What do you feel needs to go!?

Here is a touchy one.... SNEAKER HEELS! Now really... before I give my opinion, what do you think?

Tips for A Great Life

Written by a 90 year old

Now if you've made it to 90 years old, you are definitely doing something right. Take a few tips from Regina Brett, who made notes of the most important things she learned over the years. I definitely say, I have to agree with these! Want to learn how to live more, stress less and be genuinely happy? Well, she's learned the secret!

Written by Regina Brett, 90 years old, of the Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio .

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 42 lessons life taught me. It is the most requested column I've ever written.

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short – enjoy it..

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and family will.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Stay true to yourself.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. Save for retirement starting with your first pay check.

9. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

10. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

11. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

12. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

13. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it...

14 Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

15. Get rid of anything that isn't useful. Clutter weighs you down in many ways.

16. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

17. It's never too late to be happy. But it’s all up to you and no one else.

18. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

19. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

20. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

21. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

22. The most important sex organ is the brain.

23. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

24. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'

25. Always choose life.

26. Forgive but don’t forget.

27. What other people think of you is none of your business.

28. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

29. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

30. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does..

31. Believe in miracles.

32. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

33. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

34. Your children get only one childhood.

35. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

36. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

37. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

38. Envy is a waste of time. Accept what you already have not what you need.

39. The best is yet to come...

40. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

41. Yield.

42. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."

Soups That Help You Stay Slim

Yummy Winter Detox Soup

Now that you're probably weening yourself off of the sugary sweets of the holidays, and trying to get back on board with healthy habits, it's definitely helpful to add something new to your recipes. While strolling through the internet I found this lovely soup, and it is definitely a keeper in my opinion! I tweaked some of the ingredients based on what I thought. It's a good option to make at the beginning of the week, and then portion off for lunches at work.

This easy detox soup can be thin or thick, depending upon the amount of water you add.

1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cloves of garlic, minced
2 tablespoons diced onion
1 inch of fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
4 cups fresh broccoli, cut up
1/2 pound of fresh spinach leaves
3 parsnips, peeled, cored, chopped
2 ribs of celery, trimmed, chopped
A handful of fresh parsley, roughly chopped
Fresh water, as needed
Sea salt and ground pepper, to taste
Lemon or lime juice

Using a large soup pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat and stir in the garlic, onion, and ginger to season the oil. Add the broccoli, spinach, parsnips, celery and parsley, and stir a bit until the spinach wilts and collapses. Add just enough water to cover the vegetables. Remember the spinach will cook down quite a bit, so don't add too much water at first. You can always thin the soup later, if you need to.

Bring to a high simmer, cover the pot, and reduce the heat to a medium simmer. Cook for fifteen minutes or so until the veggies are softened.

Use an immersion blender to puree the soup.

Add a squeeze of lemon or lime, depending on taste and fresh ground pepper.

Want a creamier soup? Just throw in some light coconut milk! Delish!

Bollywood Style Guide

Hot Flavors To Liven Up Your Wardrobe

One of my favorite collections right now is the "Bollywood" collection. It's a great group of transitional colors that will help you go from muted wintery hues to bold spring brights! I know we're all incredibly excited for spring, but the truth is- it still isn't here yet! Marchesa showcased their spring 2013 collection at fashion week, and it was so bollywood inspired!  Before KimYe decided to be parents, they were seated front row at this show during fashion week, so you know it's worth following. Hot new trend for the new year? Maybe. Great colors to get you ready for beautiful pastels and neons? DEFINITELY!

Don't forget this is the perfect trend to mix with your favorite charm rings and a great boho-chic hair style!

What do you think of these ideas for spring 2013? (Keep in mind this isn't ready to wear, it's runway!) I Have to say- I am in love with the color choices! GORGEOUS!

Relationship Advice

Everyone messes up in relationships and has

Emmy Rossum, Actress

Other than the fact that Emmy Rossum (Shameless, Phantom of the Opera) is absolutely stunning, she definitely reflects the personality of someone who is strong and well-rounded. She's yet to be the topic of a Hollywood scandal and has shown a range of talents, from singing and dancing with grace, to acting the part of a less than glamorous twenty-something. She's certainly right when she says that everything will be okay, bad things happen- to good people, but it doesn't mean it's the end of the road, it could be a new chance to start over!

All Hail Kale

A Yummy Vegan Friendly Salad

Are you ready to kick-start your resolution to be healthier?! Whether that was actually your resolution or not, is completely irrelevant because EVERYONE needs more Kale in their diet. Kale is SUCH a super food, it's been called a nutritional power house because it's high in vitamins A, C, K, as well as Iron, Calcium, antioxidants and even has anti-inflammatory benefits. If you haven't been to The Veggie Grill, then you are certainly missing out on life- but here is one of my favorite dishes from their menu.

INGREDIENTS  (Serves – 8)
6 bunches kale
2 cups quinoa, cooked
2 cups red cabbage
8 oz walnuts
1 oz fresh ginger root
1 cup lime juice (for dressing)
2 oz. lime juice (for corn salsa)
1 ½ cups fresh papaya
½ cup rice vinegar

3 cups canola oil
1 ¼ cups evaporated cane juice
8 cups Roma tomatoes
1 cup red onion
½ cup cilantro
1 cup roasted corn
1 tsp black pepper
Shredded Carrot (for garnish)

Most Exciting Trends for 2013

Spring can't come soon enough!

Every year the transition from Winter to Spring is so exciting. The weather starts warming, flowers start blooming, and of course- those gorgeous things we lusted after this fall across runways are finally becoming available.

Now, I'm not saying go out and purchase those sought after pieces, what I am saying is- look at what's coming, shop around, and make it your own! You don't have to be designer, you've just got to have style!

Whether you're looking at horizontal or vertical- stripes are definitely back for 2013. You can do a mod approach, or even keep in nautical just make sure that this signature print is in your wardrobe. Since we know that colored denim is staying around, I'm totally feeling the idea of a black & white striped t with pastel leggings and a great pair of lace up leather ankle boots.

You don't have to ditch your trusty jacket this spring, but leather clothing with simple cuts is definitely  going to be a hot topic. I love the look in the middle, leather peplum- now that's definitely a trend I can be on board with!

Regardless of what you decide to call these, tennis dresses, sporty dresses, skater dresses or another simple type. They all come down to the same thing. Sleeveless, high waisted, A-line, flattering on almost everyone and gorgeous! I definitely think that I will be adding a couple of these to my wardrobe!

Are you going to be incorporating these into your new styles for 2013?
