From Apple Cider To Eco-friendly

Kitsch A through E

Luckily (hopefully!) we are all well versed in our A, B, C's. Well, now it's time to learn them again, Kitsch style. Over the next few days I will be going over some silly, some serious and some splendid things that we love.
Other than boots and scarves, Apple Cider has to be one of the best parts of the Fall season. Here is a quick recipe so that you can get your apple fix in!

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley may have the most amazing cheek bones and pillowy lips, but any girl can achieve a stunning blow out. All you need is a serum to tame the fly aways, a blow dryer and rounded brush. Make sure you blow dry from the roots down so that you don't get too much frizz!

Incase it wasn't completely obvious before, WE LOVE CHARMS! Our latest installment of jewelry is an entire Kitsch Collection of Charms in either gold or silver. Simple and stunning, but a definite wardrobe must.

We totally and completely agree that everyone should treat their dogs like children. Your dog is a part of your family, and if your family was having a bad hair day, you would give them a hair tie too, wouldn't you? Take a look at our lovely Howie, one of the Kitsch CEO's.

We've only got one planet, so we need to make sure to take care of it. Most people don't realize how chic being eco-friendly can be. Going on vintage store runs to get the hottest finds, grabbing that awesome reusable water bottle or purchasing hair products from companies who are actively reducing their carbon footprint, like Aveda.

Wake up to a Great Morning!

Good morning! Love, Kitsch

Fall continues to roll in as our daylight increasingly shortens and we all begin to feel the effects. It becomes easy for stresses and obligations begin to carry over from one day to the next. Early mornings start to take their toll and can leave you on edge and anxious before your day even begins. After doing some reading on ways to promote a healthy and more peaceful morning routine, I picked a few of my favorite tips to share with our Kitsch readers that helped me to clear my mind and get my extra energy back from a more positive and peaceful-soul based routine.

Although no one voluntarily choses to set their alarm clock any earlier, just a short 15 minutes can have a significant impact. After reading further into the numerous health benefits that come with utilizing your morning routine to replenish yourself and strengthen your spirit, I reevaluated making an earlier adjustment to my alarm clock and giving them a try for a week.

  • Rise through your gratitude...

Rather than sitting at the breakfast table sipping your morning coffee and skimming informative emails, grazing dramatic headlines in the paper and answering to what rolled in on your phone overnight, push it all away for five minutes to focus on your appreciation for life. Avoid putting your attention on future obligations, reflect on what has gone your way the previous day how that has brought fulfillment. Remember those involved contributing to your success and your appreciation for that. While enjoying a warm cup of coffee or tea, work on centering your mind on those you love, the accomplishments you are proud of yourself for rather than looking forward on what you have yet to accomplish. Working on your mind as one of your first things before beginning your day that really increases your ability to have control over your own thoughts and moods.

  • Spare some seconds for a stretch...

Although we all know the importance of stretching for our bodies, prioritizing the time to do it can often become the challenge. However, if you practice using those spare seconds you find throughout your morning to do a quick touch of your toes or reach for the sky, you'll really noticed its ability to help wake you up and get your oxygen flowing and circulation going. I found while I was waiting for my shower to heat up, toast to pop from the toaster or even while making my bed, giving my limbs an extra stretch all helps to make a difference.

  • Wake up with water...

From running our toothbrushes under the faucet to long hot showers, what many people forget to notice including myself, is the simple therapy of actually drinking a tall glass of water early in the morning. Drinking one 8 ounce glass of water before anything else and another after eating breakfast before heading out the door, is recommended to help promote weight loss, remove toxins, boost energy, avoid caffeine crashes, and digest breakfast. I know for me personally, this was one of the morning routine boosters that was not usually first thing on my mind after waking up, but one that I noticed the most effects from. I found it helpful for the first few days of getting into this routine to have bottled water stored at room temperature to reach for. Usually my morning coffee satisfies my need to quench my early morning thirst but it is us caffeine drinkers are who it is especially important for because of caffeine’s dehydrating properties. Increased water also promotes digestion after breakfast which is always your most important meal of the day.

What do you find helpful to get in the routine of in the morning that gets your day off to a positive and peaceful start?

I've definitely got A Crush

Good Morning, Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Very few things could make my friday night sweeter than cuddling up with a friend and going to see a Joseph Gordon-Levitt movie. I know that I am not alone in saying this, but I'm pretty certain he is my (other) soulmate. In reality though, it's been great seeing him become so successful since his humble beginnings on 3rd Rock From the Sun.
His newest film, set to debut today, Looper combines action, time travel and wtf moments all into one. It's refreshing to have a unique story hit the silver screen, and I'm super excited about the duo of Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I'm pretty excited for this new wave of serious roles because although 500 days is by far one of my favorite of all times, The Dark Night Rises is definitely something that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Also, isn't it creepy how he pulls off being Bruce Willis SO WELL? Don't forget to checkout Looper and let me know what you think!

Now that you've got your eye-candy fulfillment for the day, get to work and be prepared to kick off the weekend!  And don't forget to comment and post your favorite crush of the moment!!

A Beginners Guide To Running

Cardio intense exercise is good for your heart, your mind and your body. It also seems to be great for your instagram account. Has anyone else noticed how COOL running has become? I have countless friends posting photos of the Color Run, Zombie Run or some other cool distance related race that they've recently participated in. I've researched around and recently started a running regimen myself, so here are some quick tips to help you on your route.

  •  Plan A Route I feel so much more accomplished when I know exactly how far I've gone, and don't have to worry about coming home. Make sure that for starters you don't have to worry about crazy hills, traffic ridden streets or unsafe areas. Find something that just allows you to focus on running!
  • Get Great Tunes Maybe you prefer to run to something a little more deep and meaningful (Deathcab for Cutie, anyone?) or you would rather crank up the tempo with your favorite DJ (AVICII, for the win!)? Regardless of what you want, make sure you have it readily accessible. I've decided to create 30 minute playlists of whatever I feel like for the day. My mood alternates, my desire for intensity alternates as well. I make sure that I'm active for that whole 30 minute period, and once I feel more comfortable with that, I will increase the time.
  • Don't Worry About Running the WHOLE Time Unless you've got some crazy cardio stamina, running for the whole period may not be something you can physically do. After all, running does require controlled breathing so that you don't exhaust yourself and run out of breath. If you need to, alternate between run/power walk intervals. Eventually you will have better stamina, but it does take work and dedication!
  • Running Shoes! A new pair of shoes is always inspirational, even when it comes to meeting your fitness goals. Pick up a new pair of kicks to get you through your activities. Become proud when they turn faded and worn, that means you've been working!
  • Tame Your Mane! I used to have to stop alll of the time before I started using a kitsch hair tie and headband with every workout. The headband makes sure that my bangs and baby hair stays in place and then my hair tie takes care of the rest.
Now with those tips, you've got no excuses! Grab a running parter and track your results! It will keep you SO motivated!

Beauty Tricks & Tips

Open Eyes & Orange Lips

I learned that winged eyeliner is ALL ABOUT THE PREP! Making sure that you've got a great base and brows really helps pull together the full look. After this quick process I look instantly more awake!
  • I prep the area between my brows and lash line with either a concealer or a neutral eyeshadow primer, I've used both and have no real preference, I just use what I have readily available at that time.
  • I add definition to my brows without making them too harsh, starting just a little bit past where my brows start (where my brush is in the photo is where I start in real life).
  • I was given the tip of using scotch tape as a guideline, and I love it! No mess and it's something that's already around the house. You can use this to make it as dramatic as you'd like.
  • After I line my top lids (using a liquid pen) I also line the bottom half with a pencil, put on mascara and a highlighting powder (I used a shimmer powder from philosophy) on my brow bone and in between my eyes.

Have you noticed the HUGE trend of orange lips for fall? I absolutely love them, but couldn't pull it off for the life of me until I found this secret... prep your lips with concealer! It makes it so they don't go onto a pinkish or brown toned canvas of natural lips. When you make it as light as possible you get the true color on your lips AND it doesn't bleed as quickly! Using the highlighting powder on your cupids bow works wonders on your pout as well.

How to: Make a Jewelry Box

How to organize all of your favorites!

As a Kitsch connoisseur, I've noticed that organizing my lovely hair ties and headbands can be a bit of a task. I had a jewelry box dedicated to them, but then when I absolutely needed a particular one, I had to pull all of them out and hunt. Not very practical for every day wear.

So then came the solution, make something specifically for my hair ties and headbands! Now all you will need for this is sewing pins (I used some basic ones, and some decorative ones), a roll of paper towels, and a piece of fabric large enough to wrap your paper towel roll.

Don't worry about the pinning, the pins are so fine that they won't cause any damage to your lovely accessories! How do you organize your hair ties and headbands!?

Kitsch Style Guide

Golden Goddess, Fall 2012

Move along, silver! Gold tones are back in full force! From actual golden hues, to soft rose gold, there is no denying the fact that this metallic beauty is hugely influencing trends for fall. I've paired together some of my favorite items to show the modern Golden Goddess look for both day and night. Although the tan grecian woman wearing a toga might be the first thing you think of when it comes to a goddess, here are two new ways to rock the trend!
I love mixing rich golden colors, like this a-line skirt from Modcloth, with delicate offwhite pieces. It really helps the golden yellow stand out, without being too overpowering. I found these gorgeous shoes from Seychelles and felt that they would pair perfectly with the outfit, especially for fall! The orange and brown leather are the perfect fall shoe for a California girl, especially since it's still far too hot for boots!  Finally, top off the look with a bit of gold accessories, like this Kitsch golden necklace and earring set.

For night it's time to amp up the look and make it a bit more wild! I would leave gold mainly as an accessory color for rings and nails. Don't be worried about mixing the metals either! Yellow gold, rose gold, it's all one happy family. Find a statement dress with a pair of nude heels (since it's fall I went for suede) and you are set for a lovely evening whether it's with friends or a hot date! I adore the wine colored, backless dress I found. Backless dresses steal my heart every time! (Just make sure that you aren't overexposed, it's supposed to be a very classy sexy).

Moral of the story? Golden Goddess is all about accessorizing with sensational gold tones!

How are you working Golden Goddess into your own wardrobe??!

So Long Sweet Summer

Pumpkin Perfection (Just in time for fall!)

It's officially the first day of fall, even if it still doesn't feel like it. Check out this wonderful addition from one of our awesome interns!

I don’t know about you, but for me nothing says Fall more than your favorite foods with a pumpkin twist. Looking beyond pumpkin’s festive appeal for Fall, they also provide numerous health benefits by preventing aging, as well as fighting against cardiovascular diseases. Rather than settling for an artificial pumpkin-flavoring mixed into your morning latte, you can prepare these easy and healthy recipes, that not only satisfy your pumpkin craving but you will still receive numerous health benefits. Pumpkins offer high-levels of proteins and essential fatty acids, which prevent disease and promote healthy skin. For those of you starting up the beginning of a new school year, a pumpkin filled breakfast serves as excellent “brain food,” for day packed with studies.

Rather than splurging with a piece of traditional Pumpkin pie, I found a wonderful website called “fit sugar,” that is based on a health-recipe group that has endless low-calorie versions of tasty and easy-to-make recipes for any of your favorite foods. After being on the pumpkin prowl in search of my favorite selections, I have picked a few of the front-runners to share with our Kitsch readers. ( ....And yes for our Vegan readers, believe it or not there is a Tofu-pumpkin pie so you can enjoy some healthy pumpkin pleasures in the dessert category as well!)

Pumpkin’d Oats
Ingredients
1/4 cup (40g) steel cut oats 1/2 cup water
pinch of salt 1/2 medium banana (I added 1/4 while the oats were cooking, and 1/4 as a topping, sliced into thin pieces)
1 tsp stevia
1/4 tsp pumpkin spice

1/4 cup canned pumpkin 1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/8 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1 tsp flaxseed meal 1/2 small kiwi, peeled and sliced
1/2 tbsp (8g) sunflower seed butter pinch of sunflower seeds
handful of shredded oats or your favorite crunchy whole grain cereal

Directions
The night before you plan to eat the oatmeal: In a medium size pan, heat the oats, water, and salt over medium-high
heat, with a lid on. Once the mixture reaches a boil, turn the burner off. Make sure to keep a close watch, because a boil over can happen very quickly (speaking from experience). You do not want to lose half of your oats all over the
stovetop!
DO NOT REMOVE LID. This is very important. This keeps the moisture inside, which is going to continue to cook the oats. Leave the covered pot on the stovetop overnight. In the morning, turn the burner on to medium heat.
Once the mixture begins to simmer, approximately 5-6 minutes, stir in a 1/4 of the sliced banana. Continue to stir
often, almost whipping, until the banana breaks down and the mixture thickens. Once the oats have thickened to your desired consistency, turn the burner off and add the pumpkin, vanilla, stevia, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and
grated nutmeg while continuing to stir. Pour into a serving bowl and top with flaxseed meal, the rest of
the sliced banana, sliced kiwi, shredded oats, sunflower seeds, and sunflower seed butter.

Pumpkin Protein Spread
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp pumpkin (canned pumpkin) - 1 scoop of protein powder
-1 tbsp of Almond Butter -dash of cinnamon
Directions: Mix all ingredients together in a bowl, and spread on a pita, waffles, or perfect for dipping apples into!
I put mine on a pita and added granola on top!

A Pumpking Thanksgiving Tofu Treat..
Although there may be some skeptics with this one, it’s very easy to make and after your puree everything together and bake it (you can
use a pre-made vegan crust from your health-food store) you can’t even tell the difference!

Ingredients:
* 18 ounces lite extra-firm tofu
* 2 cups canned (or cooked) pumpkin * 2/3 cup honey
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract * 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
* 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger * 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
* 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves * 1 9" reduced-fat prepared graham cracker crust

Directions:
1) preheat oven to 350°
2) drain tofu. place in a food processor and process until smooth 3) add remaining ingredients. process until well-blended
4) pour into pie crust. bake for about an hour 5) remove from oven and chill until firm

What fall flavors are you most excited about!?

A Must-See Movie

The Perks Of Being A WallFlower

Whether you were the cool kid, an outcast, a drama geek or somewhere in between high school is never that far away. Even if you'd like it to be. I've been absolutely thrilled about the release of The Perks of Being A Wallflower since I first heard rumors of it being brought to the big screen, and now... the wait is over! I'm a total movie buff and a closet book fiend so I couldn't be happier over the marriage of these two for this project.

Sam, played by Emma Watson, is a character that any girl can relate to. Okay maybe not any girl, but I know that I'm probably relatable on some aspect. She borders between being abundantly passionate and strong to temporarily fragile. She's wise beyond her years, but continues to live a carefree life. She's young and wants more but still gets caught up in the day to day petty issues. If that doesn't describe the way you've felt at some point in your life, then I would be shocked, but that is why I love her character.

The story centers around Charlie, a young and completely socially awkward underclassmen who is flailing through life. His emotion and honesty guide the story through an all but normal year. It's totally a modern day Catcher in the Rye and should be read, at least once and I'm really hoping that the movie pulls through and does it justice.

What are you going to be checking out at the cinema this weekend? Did you see The Perks of Being A Wallflower

I WANT TO GET AWAY

I've been hit by the travel bug!

So far I've had two lay overs in Fiji and have never left the airport. Absolute and TOTAL fail on my part. I've decided that one place I absolutely need to go, in the near future is Fiji. Lucky for me one of my friends is getting married there in 2014, definitely reason enough for a holiday!

Fiji is about a ten hour flight out of LAX and doubles as a stop over for carriers like Air Pacific, Air New Zealand, and Quantas. It's in the South Pacific, and about double the distance of Hawaii. I've seen the beautiful country multiple times from high above the aircraft and I've had a great tour with the airport, but that is where the love affair ends. Yes it is gorgeous, yes it is humid, and yes they literally do sell Fiji water. Everywhere.

Gorgeous villas, like the one below, are scattered throughout the Fijian islands catering to patrons from all over the world. Every time I go to Fiji I meet people from all over the world either ending their vacation with a bronze glow or just stopping by for a plane transfer. How picturesque is this villa? I think I'm in love!

The islands all have the same beautiful white sand and clear waters, completely foreign to a California girl like myself. Even with the killer humidity the islands have, it's still absolutely breathtaking and a slice of paradise. I can almost picture myself laying out on the shore, kitsch hair tie holding my high bun, with a great book in my hand, and a lather of SPF.

Have you ever been to Fiji?
This is one trip I can't wait to document!  Google search and salivate away at the gorgeous images!!!

Take Care of Your Hair

The Ten Commandments of Hair Care

I've been lucky enough to be blessed with an abundance of hair, that has persevered through times of heat styling, dying, stripping, spraying, scrunching and scorching. Resilient would be an understatement. Be prepared for a small portion of what I call, the hair commandments.

1. Thou Shalt Not Self Bleach
I grew up wanting to be blonde. After all, Barbie, Madonna, Baby Spice and even at one point, Britney Spears all shared the common bond of being blonde. I know some people have these success stories of taking the box dye and doing some crazy ombre, or suddenly being Gwen Stefani platinum but, for the most part, self bleaching is a hair death sentence. I am all for DIY, but there is definitely a limit!! Once you've damaged your hair, you really can't undo that damage. No brazilian blowout, keratin treatment or deep conditioner can repair, it will only slightly mask the truth. Now you've got broken, damaged, unhappy hair! Leave this to the professionals ;)

2. Thou Shalt Be Strategic with Conditioner
Putting conditioner on your roots can really weigh them down and everyone wants a little volume (think less of Jersey shore and more of that model in the shampoo commercial). Next time you wash your lovely locks, only place conditioner from ear level and down. This will condition the tresses that need a little more TLC, but avoid the ones that are fresh and don't need the extra attention. You can even splurge a little more on that great conditioner since you won't have to purchase as frequently! I am personally obsessed with this product from Aveda.

3. Thou Shalt Not Be Negligent
Stylist's don't recommend a trim every six weeks to guarantee their clientele (although I'm sure it doesn't hurt), they do so because you've got to maintain a split-end-free mane. Ends will continue to split, which will then tangle, which will then split more, and so on in a vicious cycle. Without the regular trim the 1/8 inch you may have had to get cut off could be 3-4 which, if you are trying to grow out your hair would be horrible! Kitsch Tip: Stylists often offer discounts for clients who refer or prebook and oftentimes you can get bang trims for FREE! It never hurts to ask!

4. Thou Shalt Eat Clean

Too much sodium, sugar and other processed ingredients are horrible for your whole body, not just your hair. Every part of you will thank you for giving these things up.. even diet soda is a definite NO! Instead indulge in hair and skin healthy foods like salmon, avocado, dark greens, almonds, whole grains, and other natural foods! It's not rocket science, treat your body like a temple and you will look like an angel. I've recently cut all of those dirty culprits out of my diet and am amazed at how much better EVERYTHING is. You can do it!

5. Thou Shalt Be Coconut-y
Coconuts are good for other than producing coconut water and drinking out of with an umbrella straw, they produce COCONUT OIL! Incase you aren't ware, Coconut oil is a gift from the hair gods. It helps restore the protein and fatty essentials to hair and is especially potent on porous hair, and most anyone who has chemically treated their hair falls into that category. Go to your local health food store and buy a tub, you will not be disappointed!

6. Thou Shalt Stress Less
Stress levels and healthy hair, relation? Why yes! As a matter of a fact, not only can hair loss be attributed to stress but so can dandruff! One of these two pesky problems have probably effected everyone at some point, but reducing stress can help! I know stress reduction can be easier said then done, but try to find a way to restore tranquility to your schedule. One of my favorite was is through yoga, particularly Bikram or Hot Yoga. Namaste!

7. Thou Shalt Avoid Alcohol
Gel, mouse and aerosol hairsprays don't have the same punch that they used to- but be warned, anything with alcohol that you put on your hair will leech it's moisture! Even if you use a little spritz, it's better to pick up something that will hold without drying.

8. Thou Shalt Embrace Individuality
Once upon a time I wanted pin straight, perfect hair however, my hair had a different idea entirely. I've realized that although some of us may need help from time to time the idea of minimal effort is beautiful. If your hair will straighten, wonderful and I'm glad you are so lucky.  I've noticed the grass is always greener on the other side, those who want curly hair have straight and vice versa. I will embrace my wavy, crazy hippy hair for the time being and savor the lack of heat damage!

9. Thou Shalt Not Wash Daily
Sounds weird, but it's totally true. Don't wash your hair every day. Please don't let this interfere with your regular hygiene though! You just want to avoid over-stripping your hair of it's natural protective oils. Everyone's regimen will differ after day one, but keep it no less than every other day of washing.

10. Thou Shalt Not Cheat (on Kitsch!)
The idea of nice on your hair, cute on your wrist is a full blown, UNDERSTATEMENT. I know I'm set for life with these beautiful babies, I don't think I could possibly put anything else with my ponys or buns. They DON'T cause breakage and DON'T cause the icky creases. Seriously?? LIFE=MADE (at least in terms of hair accessories!) Check out this sweet new addition to our hair ties!

Creative ways to give Kitsch

A Kitsch DIY guide to Kitsch-perational Cards!

Three things I love- giving cute home made cards to brighten peoples days, receiving cute home made cards that brighten my day, and Kitsch. What do you get when you combine all three?!? These awesome little, self made cards that ANYONE with card stock, a pen and Kitsch can do. Cards and letters are a dying artform with the social networking and texting of today, but I for one still LOVE the idea of something a little handmade just because.

Supplies:

Cut the cardstock into pieces, make sure that they are on more than 3 1/2 inches
in height because this is going to be where you place the hair tie!
Be sure to include some kind of corny, witty or pun-y line on there.
If not, just keep to the point, you haven't got a lot of space to write!
I like to keep it quirky!

Stock up, plan ahead and give them away! Not only will your friend get an awesome
hair tie to commemorate your epic creation, you will definitely  brighten their day. It's
such strong impact with so minimal effort! Go for gold!

What fun ideas do you have for your own version?? (Ps- I love the blue for brides!!!!)

Fall 2012 Beauty Combinations

A Kissable Kitsch Color Guide

Check out a great article, from one of our lovely interns!

As the leaves turn tide and the summer fades, this fall is blooming with new colors for makeup. Here at Kitsch we are avid promoters for what color inspiration can do to your look! We thought we would share with you some of our favorite color accent combinations of new season that we share the love for similar color inspiration of our hair tie color pallets.

She’s Electric!

Along with the deep lip accents, the 60s “Bond Girl” look is back, with playful eyeliner and overly dramatic lashes. The winged liquid liner bordering your eyes can be matched with bold color accents as suggested on notable fashion icon Kim Kardashian. She pairs  the line layered with an exotic blue and a vibrant red lip. The Kardashian sisters know certainly how to set the trends for color tones, and we are anxious to see what they will come up with for color the launch of their first make-up line, Khroma Beauty, launching in late November this fall.

 Swan Lake

Another fall fashion trend for our

readers with the northern European features is this frosted, nude look matched with bold lashes and a light bronze smokey-eye. Kitsch is all about pearly and neutral tones, and this light- lipped look doesn’t go unnoticed with the dramatized eyes and a pull-back hair fix. We think playing down the lips and leaving your light-colored eye genes do justice, is one of our favorite make-up trends this season, and also allows you to play up what is left of your September summer glow.

Scarlet Rose

Along with the fresh frosty softness to the Swan Lake look, we are also really loving the idea of contrasting dull, bold purples and deeper lip-tones. It goes great with most skin tones and can really help strong eye colors pop. Add a light finger dusting of golden bronze eye shadow cornering the upper and lower eye lid, with a light-coat of mascara to your top lashes, and the deep dullness of the plum lip shades are simply stunning. We may be bias to this sexy scarlet look for fall but it follows our favorite new collection of Scarlet Rose hair ties for this season.

Daily Inspiration

Peaces of Me

Have you checked out all of the AMAZING new product we released last week? I couldn't be more obsessed with the amazing jewelry, hair ties and headbands that are now available. One of my favorite things about Kitsch is the beautiful use of the peace sign in so many different ways. I find that something so simple can be kept as a reminder that life should be FUN, full of love, and PEACEFUL!

"If someone thinks that love and peace is a cliche that must have been left behind in the Sixties, that's his problem. Love and peace are eternal."
John Lennon

"It isn't enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn't enough to believe in it. One must work at it. "
Eleanor Roosevelt

Keep in mind all of the amazing things that our headbandshair tiescharm collection, can be used for SO much more than just being amazingly cute! They are a reflection of you and your individuality!

I ♥ LA

A Guide to the perfect Saturday in Downtown

Cupcakes for Breakfast
On 6th between Main & S Los Angeles
Treat yourself for to a sleep in, and then stop off at the Downtown location of Babycakes NYC (it's in LA! I promise! It's just the name and where the bakery originated) for a late morning breakfast of delicious vegan baked goods. ALL of the items are vegan, most of them are gluten free and some of them are even sugar free but, rest assured they are 100% fabulous!

I love everything from there, but for breakfast, their blueberry crumb cake is fantastic. Add a cup of coffee and you are ready to adventure on to the rest of the day!

Get Your Culture On

If you haven't stopped by The Museum of Contemporary Art before, it's one of my favorite places to visit and spend a few hours. The exhibitions tend to change every few months, and even the permanent collection is worth viewing again.

MOCA has even compiled a list of tips to get your first visit going as smoothly as possible!

Shop the Afternoon Away
Conveniently located in downtown is Fashion District and the Santee Alley. It's a great place to stop and find interesting buys. It's pretty overwhelming, spanning over 100 city blocks, but if you just stick to the Santee Alley you will get a great taste of what Fashion District has to offer. Cheap shopping and lots of walking! Be prepared!

Also, always come with cash and make sure it's broken up into smaller bills. You don't want to worry about ATM charges and you will be fine with a couple of tens.

Dine in Little Tokyo

I grew up in a pretty Asian influenced household, especially when it came to food. Luckily, heading to Little Tokyo is always a great way to get some of my personal favorites. They have everything from Japanese street food like Takoyaki to menu regulars like Agedashi Tofu (pictured).

No matter where you choose, if you are keen for Japanese then I'm certain this will round out your day wonderfully!

Just don't forget the green tea iced cream!

ALMOST the Weekend!

Ice Ice Baby Coffee

Everyone has a different opinion of which day of the week is the hardest to get through. Some say it's Mondays, others loathe the mid-week Wednesdays, but if you've got a stellar weekend ahead, I think it's Friday. The weekend is so close you can almost taste it except for the long shift and commute home that stands in your way. Try this cute pick-me-up to add something special to your Friday without minimal effort!

Ingredients you've already got handy make this quick!
Save some leftover coffee (or espresso if you are desperate!) and put it in your ice cube tray. I didn't add any additional sugar because I normally like my coffee more on the dark side.

Once it's frozen just pop it out, and pour milk over the cubes to let the coffee flavor infuse! I used almond milk, it's my absolute favorite and adds just a tiny bit of nutty sweetness!

Yum!

Now that you've got your dose of caffeine, you can make sure that your Friday is quick and productive!

What are you excited about for the weekend?

Do you have any special plans?
